ReadMe for Acorn RiscPC with Internet Software (SRP41)
======================================================
Version 1.00
This ReadMe file provides extra information on the software installed on your
machine which is not covered in the printed documentation, and some hints and
tips concerning the Internet software that is installed on your hard disc
which enables you to send and receive email and browse the World Wide Web.
For information relating to issues concerning RISC OS 3.7 and the StrongARM
processor, please see the file $.Manuals.RO370/SA.
You will find comprehensive instructions installed on your hard disc in the
directory entitled Manuals. These documents are held as HTML files - ie of
a type displayed by your web browser. You may simply open this directory
and double-click on the file entitled Contents to start you off. The paper
document 'Acorn User Manuals' describes this process in more detail, so
please refer to it it for more information.
The Replay directory contains a !ReadMe describing the more advanced feature
of the Replay software supplied.
It is particularly important that you check $.Manuals.RO370/SA for any
patches or fixes that you may need when installing your own software.
Contents
--------
1) Patches - incompatibilities that can be readily fixed by applying
the supplied patches, including ones added for this release.
2) Troubleshooting - some suggestions if there are problems.
3) Internet - This section includes some guidance in the installation of
this software, and hints and tips that you may find useful.
1) Patches

A new version of ansilib for those with the Acorn C/C++ toolkit. See the
ReadMe file in Utilities.Patches.ansilib.
CallASWI
A support module for backward compatibility with older versions of RISC OS.
You do not need this item unless you are writing software for release. See
$.Utilities.370.Patches.CallASWI.ReadMe for details.
SCSIDM
A version of ScsiDM relinked to work with StrongARM. See the ReadMe file in
$.Utilities.370.Patches.SCSIDM
SparkFS
The new components required to patch !SparkFS 1.27 for use with StrongARM.
See the ReadMe file in $.Utilities.370.Patches.SparkFS.
SSound
A new version of the shared sound module, which works with StrongARM. See
the ReadMe file in $.Utilities.370.Patches.SSound. (This is preinstalled
within !System, too).
German
A patch for the German !Territory to prevent problems that have been
reported with the new ToolBox modules supplied in this release.
2) Troubleshooting
------------------
In case you encounter problems, here is a list of symptoms, with
probable reasons and remedies.
** The machine does not show any signs of life
Reasons Remedies
* An incompatible expansion card or Remove all expansion cards and
network card is fitted re-install one at a time to identify
incompatible card(s).
** The software I want to use does not work
Check the $.Utilities.370.Patches
directory supplied;
there may be a patch for your software.
Contact the software developer for an
upgrade or patch.
Try turning the cache off (press f12
and type *cache off), though the
performance is likely to be poor.
The ARM Club are planning to release a
new software package which will enable
some software to run on a StrongARM
which would otherwise be incompatible.
This should be available from:
The ARM Club, FREEPOST ND6573, London,
N12 0BR
** No networking facility available after installing the upgrade.
* Network card/software not Configure networking card/software
configured as described
* StrongARM incompatible network Contact developer of network card
card present. for possible upgrade
3) Internet
-----------
The following major software components are pre-installed on your hard disc
in the places indicated:
!Connect (2.69SU) - $.Network
!Mail (2.65SU) - $.Network
!Omni (2.04) - $.Network.Omni
!Browse (2.01) - $.Apps
!WebServe (0.43) - $.!Boot.Resources
!WebCache (0.42) - $.!Boot.Resources
!Shockwave (4.1.0a3) - $.!Boot.Resources
!ShowWeb (0.01) - $.Diversions.Tools.!ShowWeb
Acorn TimeCode - $.Diversions.TimeCode
ArgoSphere Demo - $.Diversions.ArgoSphere
To make use of this software, you must configure your computer's network
software. This is done using the Network component in your Configuration
program that you start by double-clicking on !Boot.
If your only network connection is via your modem to the Internet, then the
set up is quite simple. You will need to ensure the correct options are
set in the various windows, as described in the Internet Manual in the
section 'Configuration instructions'.
To configure your connection to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) you
will need to have your details handy, and refer to the chapter in the on
line Acorn Internet User Guide entitled 'Configuring the Internet server'.
You will need to select your ISP name and location, and add details of your
account log in details (name and password) in the configure 'Connection'
Window. You should not need to add any information in the Gateway entry. You
should also select how frequently the computer should dial out to see if
there is mail waiting.
In addition, you will need to add details of your email domain in the
configure 'Mail' configuration window (eg BashStreet.demon.co.uk) and your
organisation name in configure 'News'. Examples of all these windows are
available in the manual to illustrate the different types of connection.
Hints and tips
--------------
The applications !Connect, !Mail, !WebServe and !Browse together will
require more than 4MBytes of memory free to operate; less than this and
your computer may run out of memory. The Browser is a large and complex
application, and web contents are so rich in heavyweight graphics, that a
minimum of 8 MBytes free space is recommended - even more if you wish to use
the Shockwave plug-in.
!Mail is a fairly basic application, but capable of working with !Connect to
send simple emails, or those with attachments. Sometimes interworking with
other mail packages may mean that Acorn filetype information is lost, and
you may wish to turn complex attachments to text by uuencoding them, using a
tool such as SparkFS, so they are sent as coded text files. Do be aware
that emails with very long lines, especially those which have been generated
with no wordwrap, or exported from document processors, may have lines
truncated.
!Shockwave is a plug-in to the browser that is called by the browser when the
content of a web page calls up a Shockwave movie. Note that this software
is compatible with Shockwave/Director 4 only, and that many web sites are
now using Shockwave 6. An update to Shockwave 6 may be available from Acorn
in the future. It is not a fully validated product, therefore it is shipped
as beta software that you may wish to use.
!Browse has been extensively tested, but it is still likely that there are web
sites which may cause it to give different results from other browsers, or even
fail to render completely. The very nature of the web is that it is developing
very rapidly, so it is likely that upgrades will be made available from time to
time. You should visit http://www.acorn.com/browser/ to see what the latest
status is for such upgrades.
Currently, JavaScript is not supported, and significant numbers of web sites are
tending to use this technology, which is completely different from Java.
If you try to access a mailto: link without having a suitable supporting mail
application available, then you will be unable to follow the mailto:sysadmin
link mentioned in the error page reported - this is a general report,
indicating a general course of action.
Interaction with PC Cards
If you are running a PC Card that is configured to use the serial port, then
starting the Connect application which assumes responsibility of the serial port
may cause the machine to crash.
Selecting an Acorn Internal Modem
If you have purchased an Acorn Internal Modem Card, then the modem that you
should select in the Connect=>Configure=>Modems choices is the one entitled
'Default'.
Use on an isolated intranet
When using the software bundle on an intranet with no name service provision,
you may experience problems due to !Connect ensuring that the DNS client
module is loaded, without being able to provide the necessary environment to
ensure its correct operation; this is best addressed by preventing !Connect
from loading the module.
